Concussion Management & Treatment

What is Post-Concussion Syndrome?
Post-concussion syndrome is the “persistence of physical, cognitive, emotional and sleep symptoms beyond the usual recovery period after a concussion” –World Health Organisation.

How common is Post-Concussion Syndrome?
Research indicates between 10-15% of people who suffer a concussion do not resolve within the normal period; 10 days or less.

What causes Post-Concussion Syndrome?

Symptoms of concussion may persist for three reasons:
• The autonomic system which regulates blood pressure and heart rate (among other things) is not functioning correctly which causes symptoms to aggravate on increasing physical activity
• The vestibular system is injured and is causing ongoing symptoms related to concussion such as dizziness, blurred vision, fogginess, motion sensitivity
• The cervical spine (neck) is injured during the concussion due to whiplash type injury which can cause many ongoing symptoms of concussion such as headaches, blurred vision, difficulty concentrating

When should I seek help if I have had a Concussion?

If you or someone you love has had a concussion and symptoms have persisted for more than 10 days it is important that they are assessed to determine the cause of their ongoing symptoms.
Once the cause is identified we will be able to provide individually tailored treatment to assist in a full recovery of symptoms and a return to all activities.
